Sea Wolves Men’s Cancer Pack Hosts 3rd Annual "Man Up to Cancer" Fundraiser – A Resounding Success in BC Men's Cancer Support

Nanaimo, BC – September 21, 2024 – The Sea Wolves Men’s Cancer Pack celebrated its 3rd Annual "Man Up to Cancer" fundraiser at Wolf Brewing, marking the organization's most successful event to date. With clear skies and a vibrant atmosphere, this year’s event attracted over 250 attendees who gathered to raise awareness and funds for men’s cancer support in British Columbia. The fundraiser generated an impressive $21,200, all of which will go directly to helping men battling cancer in Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, and beyond.

A Community Dedicated to BC Men’s Cancer Support

The event featured a range of activities, including family-friendly fun, live music, BBQ, and a powerful men’s cancer panel discussion. The highlight of the panel was an emotional testimony from Phil Dutton, who shared how the Sea Wolves supported his recovery from throat and neck cancer. Stacey, a representative from the Calgary Urology Center, also spoke about advances in prostate cancer treatment and the importance of PSA screenings, a critical issue the Sea Wolves are advocating for on Vancouver Island. Jody, a current breast cancer patient, shared her journey and offered advice on how to support loved ones fighting cancer.

Music, Fundraising, and Community Spirit

Music played a central role throughout the day, with live performances from local bands, two of which featured musicians who are cancer survivors themselves. An additional fundraiser held at Landlubber Pub the following week raised another $755, further supporting the Sea Wolves' mission.

Supporting Men with Cancer in BC: The Chemo Backpack Program

At the heart of the Sea Wolves' efforts is the Chemo Backpack Program, which provides men undergoing cancer treatment with backpacks filled with essential and comforting items. Each backpack costs about $150 to assemble and includes practical items such as toques, blankets, water bottles, ginger chews, lip balm, and hand lotion. The program has been a lifeline for men receiving treatment at local cancer centers, providing comfort and a reminder that they are not alone in their fight.

A cancer care nurse from Campbell River Hospital shared the profound impact of the program, stating, "There are many donations that come our way, but most have a feminine flair. Having these packs for our male patients was great. One gentleman, after receiving his backpack, was blown away by the support from other men who had faced cancer themselves. It meant so much to him.”

Their advocacy work focuses on raising awareness about men’s health issues and pushing for greater access to early detection methods, such as PSA testing without a doctor’s referral. Building a Stronger Future for Men’s Cancer Support in BC

The Sea Wolves Men’s Cancer Pack continues to grow each year, with the "Man Up to Cancer" fundraiser now a staple event for cancer support on Vancouver Island.
